Fátima`s Sanctuary
Fátima
The Sanctuary of Fatima is a religious complex located in Fatima, Portugal, and is one of the world's most important Catholic pilgrimage sites.
The sanctuary is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the apparitions that three children claimed to have witnessed in 1917. The site includes the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Basilica of the Holy Trinity, and several other religious structures.
The Chapel of the Apparitions is the most important area of the sanctuary and is believed to be where the Virgin Mary appeared to the children. It was built shortly after the apparitions and is a small chapel with a glass roof and an altar. Visitors come to the chapel to pray, light candles, and seek grace.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima was built in the 1950s and is one of the largest churches in Portugal. It is decorated with mosaics depicting the scenes of the apparitions and houses the tombs of the visionaries Francisco and Jacinta Marto.
The Basilica of the Holy Trinity is a modern church built in 2007 to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims visiting the sanctuary. It is an impressive building with a capacity of around 8,000 people.
