Church of São Lourenço
Almancil
The Church of São Lourenço is located in the town of Almancil, in the Algarve region of Portugal.
This church is considered one of the most important examples of Baroque art in the country and is renowned for its stunning tilework.
The church was built in the 18th century and is dedicated to Saint Lawrence. Its façade is relatively simple, but the interior is filled with beautiful art and decoration. The ceiling is decorated with intricate paintings and the altarpiece is a magnificent work of gilded wood carving.
However, the most famous aspect of the Church of São Lourenço is undoubtedly its azulejo tilework. The walls of the nave are completely covered with blue and white tiles depicting scenes from the life of Saint Lawrence. These tiles were produced in Lisbon and are considered to be some of the finest examples of Portuguese tilework from the 18th century.
